Running a small bed and breakfast in Nether Stowey in early autumn is a lovely experience. The village is quieter and there is more time to do things. This weekend we went out mushroom hunting for our Somerset tasting menu and came back with a huge (40cm) puffball mushroom. there was plenty to go round and after sautéing it in butter and home-grown garlic the result was fantastic.

The Stowey Brewery has also just barrelled the beer for this year’s Minehead Beer Festival, a 5% American style microbrewery ale. First tastings suggest that it will be good, but we’ll wait and see what happens at the beer festival. Initial comments from the guesthouse guests is that it is ‘lovely’.
